I'm not following any particular theme today as I wanted to discuss one recent movie that kept popping up on my various tours through TikTok and give an update on a previous recommendation. The movie on the docket today is Oddity, yet another Shudder original, and given that, I had only negative expectations for the movie. However, I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised. There are some severe caveats to that statement though. Is it a good horror movie? No. It does have horror elements to it, such as a very creepy life-size doll and psychic power. But it's not remotely scary.
Rather, it's more of a mystery. Okay, well then does it succeed as a mystery horror movie? And the answer again is no. For its plot is easily guessed after about 10 minutes into watching it. Yet, despite this, Oddity was still an enjoyable movie to watch. The actors were by and far very good at their jobs, and the cinematography was excellent. So, as long as you're not looking for a scary movie that has a complex plot to it that would just keep you guessing for hours on end, then maybe give this one a watch.
All I can say is that the major redeeming factor of this movie is that Shudder didn't completely poop itself for a chain. So yeah. I don't regret seeing Oddity, and I haven't said that for a very long time after seeing something on Shudder. Now, on the flip side, the update to the recommendation I gave in the last fight episode is that regarding the new anime adaptation of Junji Ito's Uzumaki or Spiral. As I reported before, the first episode, and there's only four total, mind you, was brilliant. The second episode started a downward trend, unfortunately.
This one covered so much material that it really couldn't do any of the stories justice. That and the animation quality went downhill. But I thought that maybe this was a one-off, and I was still excited for the third. And dear lord, I should not have been. The animation in that one was so much worse. I only learned afterwards that the director and animation team behind this project was switched after the first episode, and you can definitely tell. Sadly, the glimpses of brilliance that we saw in the first is nowhere to be found in the subsequent one.
And the scariest part of this series is just waiting to see how bad the final episode is going to be, which I will reluctantly watch this Sunday, October 20th. If you can't tell, I actually did a major update to the camera setup I have as I decided to truly double down on the video side. So I hope you like the boost in quality. Given that I have a face for radio and a voice for the newspaper, I figured, hey, why not complete the horrible triumvirant of bad qualities for every medium out there? Yay me.
